A cat chasing a mouse in a game of cat and mouse

Hummel's Escape from Duchess

Claws scrabbling against the floor, Hummel tore around the corner. A flash of orange fur followed hot on his tiny heels. It was Duchess, the neighbourhood's resident feline terror, and she'd spotted him! Fear shot through him. He knew what awaited if he didn't keep his lead.

SKREEEE! The corner offered no refuge. Duchess launched upon him, a blur of paw and fur. Hummel braced himself, a squeak escaping his tiny throat.

"Gotcha!" she declared, triumphant.

Hummel squeezed his eyes shut, resigning himself to his fate. Sergeant Hummel, leader of the mice, was going to become dinner. "Tell... my family..." he squeaked, voice trembling, "I love them..."

A beat of silence followed. Hummel peeked open an eye to see Duchess, not a monster ready to devour him, but just looking at him? Duchess blinked. The fire in her eyes dimmed, replaced by confusion.

"You're pathetic," she sighed, a hint of disappointment in her flick of the tail. "Go tell them yourself."

She tossed Hummel aside with a flick of her paw before stalking away, leaving a bewildered Hummel in her wake. He sat there, dumbfounded but undeniably relieved.

Hummel quickly scurried off to lick his wounds and contemplate the strange turn of events.
