A dog trying to catch squirrels with a net as his friends look on

When Squirrels Become Scary!

Tap tap tap tap tap tap…

Bruno and Boxer wandered into Gizmo’s backyard to see what he was up to. “What are you doing?” Boxer asked, curious about Gizmo's latest invention.

“Entering the parameters for my squirrel trap,” Gizmo replied, never looking away from the screen of his Berrybook laptop, deep in concentration.

Both Bruno and Boxer peered towards the trap. Before them sat an intricate contraption filled with acorns sitting on top of a pressure plate. Above was a weighted net affixed to a pole, holding it outstretched.

“The squirrel jumps into the bowl to grab its fill of acorns, and, boom, its weight triggers the net to trap him inside,” Gizmo explained like it was a standard operating procedure.

“Gizmo... why are we even at war with the squirrels? It’s time you told us,” Bruno probed.

“I don’t know how to explain it… You’ll laugh at me.”

“We promise we won’t!”

“Fine… Gizmo hesitated. When I was little... every day for the whole summer a squirrel would chase me viciously…”

Bruno and Boxer, not expecting to hear that, tried desperately not to burst out laughing. Gizmo shot them a scathing look. “You said you wouldn’t laugh.”

“We’re sorry. We weren’t laughing at you, keep going!” Both Bruno and Boxer felt like they were going to burst.

Gizmo sighed before continuing, “Eventually the squirrel caught me and held me hostage…” But that was too much. They both burst out in hysterical laughter, riled up on the ground, unable to stop.

Gizmo slammed down his laptop and vaunted off.

“Gizmo! We’re sorry! No come back!” they begged through laughter and tears.

This comic shows us how our childhood fears can seem pretty funny when we grow up. Even though Gizmo's friends try their best not to laugh, the idea of tiny squirrels terrorising a cat is just too funny to resist! It reminds us that it's okay to laugh at our old fears sometimes - they might just make for great stories later.

Poor Gizmo might never live this story down, but at least he's brave enough to share it!
