Red Herring in a Nutshell

Gizmo didn't improve the deal. He just put something shiny on the table and waited.

The new work agreement was bad on its own terms: longer hours, same pay, more responsibility. A $100 gift card doesn't change any of that. But it doesn't have to - because once it's on the table, nobody's thinking about the agreement anymore. That's the Red Herring. You introduce something irrelevant, exciting, or emotionally charged, and it quietly derails the actual argument.

The detail that makes this one particularly good: the gift card can only be used at work. Gizmo isn't even giving them something new. He's giving them back a fraction of the value they're about to give up. And they sign anyway.
