"Bro, that's your fifth ice cream." "Man, this ice cream slaps!" "..." "Relax, I do push ups sometimes."

Hold on. What do push ups have to do with eating five ice creams? Absolutely nothing. But now you're thinking about push ups instead of ice cream. The subject just changed, and you didn't even notice.

Someone raises a valid point. Instead of addressing it, the other person drags the conversation somewhere completely different. A new topic. A shiny distraction. Something that sounds relevant but has nothing to do with the original argument. By the time you realise what happened, the original point is long gone.

That's the Red Herring Fallacy. Your learners see it everywhere - in arguments with friends, on social media, in politics. "You didn't do the dishes." "Well, I mowed the lawn last week!" "Why is this app tracking my data?" "But look at all the amazing features!" The real issue gets buried under something totally unrelated, and nobody ever goes back to it.

This 20-page printed activity pack teaches kids to recognise when someone dodges a point by changing the subject entirely. Through an illustrated true story, a funny comic, and hands-on activities featuring Duchess (the cat) and Bruno (the dog), learners don't just memorise a definition. They understand the fallacy well enough to catch it in the wild.

THE STORY INSIDE

Every pack starts with a true story from history - not a paragraph in a textbook, but a fully illustrated, multi-page narrative.

This pack features the story of President George W. Bush and the Iraq War - one of the biggest red herrings in modern political history. In 2003, Bush led the invasion of Iraq on March 20. For weeks, American forces bombed Baghdad, killing thousands. His justification? Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction - nukes, chemical and biological weapons designed to wipe out cities.

Americans supported the invasion. They were still angry from 9/11, when nearly 3,000 people were killed after Al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked planes and attacked the Twin Towers and Pentagon. The attackers were led by Osama Bin Laden, hiding in Afghanistan under Taliban protection. But Bush linked Iraq to the threat: "Saddam gives money to terrorists!" "He's plotting against us!" "Act now or face disaster!"

After extensive searching however, no WMDs were found. No nukes, no chemical labs, no biological stockpiles. Nothing. When journalists asked, "Mr. President, why say Iraq had WMDs when none existed?" - Bush didn't answer the WMD question. Instead, he completely changed the story: "Saddam was a monster. Wasn't removing him worth it?" The new narrative became: "We invaded to free the Iraqi people!" But that wasn't the original reason for invasion.

Classic red herring. When challenged on his original claim (Iraq has WMDs), Bush dodged by switching to a different argument (Saddam was evil). The war officially ended in 2011. But violence continued for years. By 2020, more than 185,000 Iraqi civilians were dead.

📝 Red Herring Breakdown - Clear definition, worked examples, and activities to build mastery.

✏️ Interactive Activities - Code Breaker puzzle, Match the Fallacy challenge, The Great Word Hunt, and a Draw Your Own Comic page where learners create their own fallacy scenario.

📋 Answer Sheet - For teachers, parents, and group leaders. No extra prep needed.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

Most fallacy resources are a definition on a slide and a matching worksheet. This pack teaches through storytelling. Kids don't just learn what the Red Herring fallacy is - they see it destroy lives in a true historical story, laugh at it in a comic, and then hunt for it in real-world examples. That's how you make a concept stick.
