"This movie is so dead, man." "Dude, this was YOUR idea." "We paid $25 for this. I'm not bailing now!"

The movie's terrible. You both know it. But you already paid for the tickets, drove to the cinema, bought the popcorn - so you sit there for another 90 minutes, suffering, because walking out would mean "wasting" the money. Except you're wasting something worse: your time.

You've already spent the money. You're not getting it back whether you stay or leave. But it feels like quitting would make the loss worse, so you keep going. That's the trap.

That's the Sunk Cost Fallacy. Your learners fall into it all the time - and so do adults. "I've already read half this book, I can't stop now." "I've been practising guitar for two years, I can't switch to drums." "I've spent so long on this assignment, I might as well finish it this way even though it's wrong." The past investment becomes the reason to keep going, even when the smart move is to stop.

This 20-page printed activity pack teaches kids to recognise when someone keeps doing something that isn't working just because they've already put time, money, or effort into it. Through an illustrated true story, a funny comic, and hands-on activities featuring Duchess and Bruno, learners don't just memorise a definition. They understand the fallacy well enough to catch it in the wild.

THE STORY INSIDE

Every pack starts with a true story from history - not a paragraph in a textbook, but a fully illustrated, multi-page narrative. This pack features the story of America and the Vietnam War - the most devastating example of the sunk cost fallacy in modern history. China had gone communist in 1949, and US leaders feared the rest of Southeast Asia would follow like dominoes. So in the 1950s, the US sent a few advisors to South Vietnam to stop communism. This was known as Domino Theory.

Then in 1961, John F. Kennedy sent 16,000 soldiers to train the locals and squash the communists. But the Vietcong weren't going down without a fight. They used guerrilla tactics - sneaky, surprise attacks, booby traps, and tunnels to fight back. Things weren't going so well.

So in 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson sent in the full blown US army, thinking numbers could win the war. President Johnson refused to give up, no matter how many soldiers died. Backing out would mean all the money, time, and lives had been wasted. "We've come too far to turn back now." Troops grew to 184,000 by 1965, 385,000 by 1966, and over 540,000 by 1969. The war dragged on - unwinnable, yet unstoppable.

It was a disaster. In 1973, American citizens finally demanded withdrawal. The US withdrew their troops. Two years later, North Vietnam captured Saigon. The communists won. It was all for nothing. 58,220 American soldiers dead. Over 2 million Vietnamese killed. President Richard Nixon claimed "We achieved peace with honour." He never admitted the whole thing was a failure.

The sunk cost fallacy is ruthless. Sometimes the bravest choice is to cut your losses, walk away, and admit you were wrong.

WHAT MAKES THIS DIFFERENT

Most fallacy resources are a definition on a slide and a matching worksheet. This pack teaches through storytelling. Kids don't just learn what the Sunk Cost fallacy is - they see it destroy lives in a true historical story, laugh at it in a comic, and then hunt for it in real-world examples. That's how you make a concept stick.
